Another working con
11th-Apr-2011 04:44 pm
Last weekend I went to a convention I've never been to before to help work security.

I'd never even been to that TYPE of convention before.

It was a FURRY con.

I had a great time. The attendees were most of them pretty wonderful. Amazingly polite. Very friendly. I had a less than pleasant run-in with one of them, and I think there were at least 2 women who had their hearts broken -- but that might be par for the course of a weekend when you're about 20 and in a sample size of about 1000. (Don't know the M/F breakdown.)

Several people made me smile every time they walked past, for one reason or another. One fellow lent me a book which I'll need to read & return.

Maybe I'll even go to some programming next year... Just need to learn to watch my tongue, which keeps wanting to pop out inappropriate words. (Like "costume".)

And when I got home on Sunday, I spent under 2 hours fighting with the network before it started working again!!! I don't know why it stopped, nor why it started, but I think I know more than I did a week ago.

The pictures I've seen of furry cons are always more visually interesting than those of filk cons, for sure.

I think it's pretty weird that some of fandom looks down especially on furry fandom--most hobbies can be easily mocked, because by their nature, they aren't particularly useful, after all.

And yes, every hobby has some touchy language points that outsiders don't get. Don't call amateur astronomers "amateur astrologers," don't call model rocketeers "amateur rocketeers," and don't call model railroads "toy trains...

The fandom seemed a bit younger than SF fandom in general -- although there were several rather-older fen. They seemed to drink more heavily overall (and perhaps hold it less well) -- but I was really struck by how accepting, kind, and fun they were. (I learned the gender of the cat who'd been on and off keeping me company on Sunday.)

And did you see the one with a needle spiking out of his or her head? The furry with the syringe on top?

I'm _really_ glad that I had just finished swallowing and put my glass down before I read that comment. It should have come with a warning label.

I had a fabulous time working IndyFurCon last summer. It was my first furry con and, like you, I found the attendees to be polite, friendly and engaging. Maybe my perspective is skewed by too many years in theater, but I didn't really find them any odder than re-enactors, renfaire types or anybody else who develops and wears a persona. Theirs are just fuzzy. :-)

I'll definitely be working that one again this year! Next stop... Anthrocon! (Probably not this year for me, though... short on both vacation time and travel funds this time.)

I think I'd like to work AC -- but the number of days I'd need to take off, combined with how busy I am -- at work and home... Don't know when it'll be.

I was quite disappointed to need to miss Indy Fur Con last year -- don't remember why I couldn't make it...
