Wow. I'm utterly overwhelmed. Shocked and surprised. And amazed too.
Spouse & I are doing a little get-away -- not home -- in a hotel -- eating out -- whatever -- to celebrate our 12th anniversary.
A while ago we decided that it didn't make sense to do xmas gifts, and we don't always do birthday gifts, or even anniversary gifts. This getaway was pretty much a mutual gift -- and it's been (I think) 7 years since the last time we took vacation and did something extra-special for the day.
I'm either very easy or really difficult to buy for, depending on how you look at it. I like a lot. I'll probably be pleased with just about anything I get... but anything I _really_ want I probably already have.
Except... there's something I've been kind of looking for/at for about a year an a half now. And I think the spouse didn't know. But when I arrived at the hotel (a little late -- work and traffic were unkind) I saw a glowing light on the desk. I wandered over and wondered briefly if the hotel had a changing display of pretty mountains and trees and whatnot... until I saw a picture of someone I knew, and spouse said "Happy Birthday". Yes, it's a little early for that, but the presentation, and the surprise and all that just can't be beat! And ever better than the display was that he'd gone back though all our digital pictures -- Australia, Alaska, Scotland, Japan, US travel, home... (including several bittersweet pictures of people who are no longer with us) and things taken from the web.
Then we walked over to a nearby restaurant, and since we were walking I figured it would be okay to drink. I was going to get a Margarita, but then I saw that they had Mojitos on the menu as well. Hard to choose! I'd never heard of the Mojito until WorldCon this year in Denver when a friend introduced me to ... several different kinds. At that point I learned that there are many different flavors, and I like the sweet ones best. Last night I realized that there _is_ such a thing as a mojito being too sweet. But it was still yummy.
