Coffee

I got a Groupon for a local coffee place, and I went in -- met the owner, bought enough coffee to use up the Groupon, and a few pieces of hardware so he probably made a tidy profit.

But while I was there, he offered me a cup of coffee on the house. I wavered, but accepted.

Caffeine doesn't do much for me. On an empty stomach it will make me jittery. Sometimes it affects my digestion. If I'm tired it will put me to sleep, knock me right out. But I've never had it behave in the manner that "normal" people say coffee does.

Before.

Likewise; military-style caffeine gum barely has any effect on me, and I can eat chocolate-covered espresso beans like candy. But this one time...

On the way back from a con in southern Florida, I stopped for the night at a motel in the panhandle. At breakfast the next morning in the attached restaurant I had a cup of coffee with my food. It was very good. I wasn't the only person to think so; the man at the next table asked the waitress what brand it was. Bingham, she replied.

I don't know what was in it, but it's probably illegal. I've never been so awake in my life. I drove straight-armed and bolt upright for the next hour and a half. Yet the coffee hadn't tasted strong, and I wasn't jittery; just very, very alert.

At least it's the middle of the day.
